What is Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a common, minor condition of the eye. It is generally easily treatable curvature of the eye. It occurs when the cornea (the front surface of the eye) is not of perfectly curved shape. Many people who wear glasses have astigmatism.

Signs and symptoms

Astigmatism has the following symptoms:

  • Blurred or distorted vision
  • Eyestrain
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue

Possible complications

Astigmatism can lead to refractive errors and disorders that affect the ability of the eye to focus on an object.

What causes

Astigmatism usually occurs as a result of problems connected to the cornea that is imperfectly curved. So, the light is not focused correctly onto the retina. It results in blurred vision. Some people are born with astigmatism. This condition is likely to be hereditary (runs in families).

Other possible causes of astigmatism may be:

  • Injuries of the cornea
  • Changes of the cornea caused by eye surgery
  • Keratoconus

Prevention

The hereditary astigmatism can not be prevented. The incidental astigmatism caused by trauma of the cornea can be decreased by attention to eye safety.

Treatment

Astigmatism can be treated by:

  • Corrective lenses (eyeglasses, contact lenses)
  • Refractive surgery (LASIK surgery, photorefractive keratectomy, laser-assisted subepithelial keratomileusis, radial keratotomy)
