What is Impotence

Impotence (Erectile dysfunction) is a common condition among men characterizing by the consistent inability to sustain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse or the inability to achieve ejaculation or both. This disease may temporarily affect most men at some time in their lives.

Common symptoms of impotence include:

What causes

There are 2 main causes of importance: psychological and physical or it may be a combination of the two.

A psychological cause can be temporary or long standing and is a more common cause of impotence in men under 35. The most common psychological factors that can cause impotence are as follows:

  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Guilt
  • Unresolved gay feelings
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Sexual boredom
  • Bereavement
  • Mental exhaustion and tiredness
  • Worry

The cause of impotence in men over 35 years of age is usually a physical problem. The most common factors of this problem are:

  • High blood pressure
  • A specific illness (diabetes or multiple sclerosis)
  • Injury or major surgery to the pelvic area
  • High cholesterol
  • Age
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Smoking
  • Drinking too much alcohol ("Brewers Droop")
  • Drug abuse
  • Side effects of medical treatment


Prevention

You should eat a healthy balanced diet, take regular exercise, stop smoking and heavy drinking to avoid problems with erections. You should also try to reduce stress, get plenty of sleep and try to resolve any problems in your relationship that may be causing you stress.
