What is Atovaquone

Atovaquone is a medicine that is used to treat or prevent pneumonia caused by a fungal infection called Pneumocystitis carinii (also called Pneumocystis jiroveci). It refers to a class of medications called antiprotozoal agents and works by stopping the growth of certain types of protozoa that can cause pneumonia.


Side effects of Atovaquone

Side effects of Atovaquone are the followings:

  • nausea;
  • vomiting;
  • diarrhea;
  • headache;
  • dizziness;
  • anxiety;
  • difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.

But if you have any of these serious symptoms it is necessary to visit your doctor immediately:

  • rash;
  • fever;
  • swelling of the eyes, face, lips, tongue, mouth or throat;
  • hives;
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing;
  • hoarseness or throat tightness.


Indication

Atovaquone is used to treat or prevent pneumonia caused by a fungal infection called Pneumocystitis carinii (also called Pneumocystis jiroveci).


Precautions

Before using Atovaquone you should inform your doctor if you have:

  • liver disease;
  • a stomach or intestinal disorder.


Dosage forms

Usual adult dose for Pneumocystis Pneumonia is 750 mg orally twice a day for 21 days.

Usual adult dose for Pneumocystis Pneumonia Prophylaxis is 1500 mg orally once a day.
