Benicar
Brand Names
OlmesartanWhat is Benicar
Benicar (olmesartan) belongs to the group of medicines called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It keeps blood vessels from narrowing, which lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow.
Benicar treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children who are at least six years old. Sometimes it may interact with other blood pressure medications.
High blood pressure may cause risks for the workload of the heart and arteries. If it continues for a long time, the heart and arteries may not function properly. This can damage the blood vessels of the brain, heart, and kidneys, resulting in a stroke, heart failure, or kidney failure. High blood pressure also may increase the risk of heart attacks. These problems may be less likely to occur if blood pressure is controlled.
This medicine blocks the action of a substance in the body that causes blood vessels to tighten. As a result, Benicar relaxes blood vessels. This lowers blood pressure.
