What is Butorphanol

Butorphanol is an opioid pain medication that works by changing the way the body senses pain. It is effective for treating moderate to severe pain. It is also used as part of anesthesia for surgery, or during early labor (if childbirth is expected to be more than 4 hours away).


Side effects of Butorphanol

Butorphanol common side effects may include:

  • excessive tiredness
  • difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
  • unusual dreams
  • dizziness
  • weakness
  • headache
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • constipation
  • stomach pain
  • loss of appetite
  • feeling hot
  • sweating
  • flushing
  • pain, burning, numbness, or tingling in the hands or feet
  • uncontrollable shaking of a part of your body
  • nervousness
  • confusion
  • agitation
  • hostility
  • intense happiness
  • feeling of floating
  • sad mood
  • blurred vision
  • ringing in the ears
  • ear pain
  • unpleasant taste
  • dry mouth
  • difficulty urinating

If you have noticed any of these serious side effects, contact your doctor at once:

  • slowed breathing
  • difficulty breathing
  • pounding heartbeat
  • fainting
  • hallucinations (seeing things or hearing voices that do not exist)
  • rash
  • hives


Indication

Butorphanol is available as injection that used to relieve moderate to severe pain. Butorphanol can also be used to relieve pain during labor and to prevent pain and decrease awareness before or during surgery. It works by changing the way the body senses pain.


Precautions

Stop using this medication if you:

  • have ever had an allergic reaction to a narcotic medicine;
  • have recently used narcotic medications and have become dependent on them;
  • have asthma, COPD, sleep apnea, or other breathing disorders;
  • have liver or kidney disease;
  • have a history of head injury or brain tumor;
  • have heart disease, high blood pressure, recent heart attack;
  • have mental illness;
  • have a history of drug or alcohol addiction.
