What is Caffeine citrate

Caffeine citrate is a stimulant medicine for central nervous system. It is also very effective in the treatment of the lungs and metabolism.


Side effects of Caffeine citrate

You should stop using caffeine citrate and contact your doctor at once if have noticed such serious side effects as:

  • hives
  • difficulty breathing
  • swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat
  • stomach pain, tenderness, bloating
  • constipation or diarrhea
  • green-colored vomit
  • blood in the stools
  • unusual weakness
  • seizure (convulsions)
  • twitching or uncontrolled muscle movements
  • fever, fast or slow heart rate

Less serious side effects include:

  • sleep problems
  • loss of appetite
  • fussiness
  • excessive crying


Indication

Caffeine citrate is used to treat problems of central nervous system. It is also used to treat breathing problems in premature infants.


Precautions

You should not use caffeine citrate if you have:

  • seizures
  • heart disease
  • kidney disease
  • liver disease
  • high or low blood sugar
  • are pregnant, plan to be pregnant or breastfeeding
  • had an allergic reaction to it in the past


Dosage forms

Usual Adult Dose for Drowsiness is 100-200 mg orally not more often than every 3- 4 hours.

You should limit the use of caffeine containing medications, foods or beverages while taking this medicine, because too much caffeine can lead to nervousness, irritability, sleeplessness and rapid heartbeat.

Usual Pediatric Dose for Drowsiness: children of 12 years: 100- 200 mg not more often than every 3- 4 hours.

Usual Pediatric Dose for Apnea of Prematurity

Loading Dose: 20 mg/kg caffeine citrate intravenous (over 30 minutes) once

Maintenance Dose: 5 mg/kg caffeine citrate intravenous (over 10 minutes) or orally every 24 hours.

Note: The dose of caffeine base is one-half the dose when expressed as caffeine citrate (e.g., 20 mg of caffeine citrate is equivalent to 10 mg of caffeine base).
