What is Cellulase

Cellulase is a digestive enzyme and anticholinergic combination. It degrades the plant polysaccharide called cellulose. It is a structural component of plant cell walls. Cellulase is used to treat phytobezoars. They are clumps of indigestible vegetable matter that contain lots of cellulose. The formation of such bezoars can be life threatening.


Side effects of Cellulase

The common side effects of cellulase include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Constipation
  • Decreased sweating
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth
  • Enlarged pupils
  • Excitability
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Nervousness
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Weakness


Indication

Cellulase is commonly used for relieving symptoms of indigestion (e.g. feeling of fullness, gas, bloating) that occur after meals. Cellulase is a digestive that works by helping the body to digest protein, starch and fat. It also decreases bowel spasms.


Precautions

You should not use cellulase or spot taking this medication if you have:

  • Allergies to it or to pork protein
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) or a flare-up of long-term pancreas problems
  • Severe esophagus problems ( irritation, narrowing), a blockage of the stomach, bowel or bladder
  • Bowel motility problems or severe bowel problems (severe ulcerative colitis, toxic megacolon)
  • Glaucoma, myasthenia gravis or heart problems caused by severe bleeding


Dosage forms

Cellulase should be taken by mouth with each meal or snack as directed by your doctor. Remember that you should not exceed 4800 FCC Cellulase units per day and not exceed 1200 FCC Cellulase units per single dose.
