What is Dyazide

Dyazide (triamterene-HCTZ) is a combination of triamterene and hydrochlorothiazide that prescribed as a diuretic for the treatment of high blood pressure and fluid retention. This medication belongs to a class of medications called diuretics ('water pills'). It causes the kidneys to get rid of unneeded water and sodium from the body into the urine, but reduces the loss of potassium.


Side effects of Dyazide

Dyazide common side effects may include:

  • gas
  • frequent urination
  • dizziness
  • headache

If you have noticed any of these serious side effects, inform your doctor as soon as possible:

  • rash or hives
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • pain in the upper stomach area
  • swelling or tenderness of stomach area
  • upset stomach
  • vomiting
  • fever
  • rapid pulse
  • extreme tiredness
  • unusual bruising or bleeding
  • loss of appetite
  • yellowing of skin or eyes
  • flu-like symptoms
  • muscle weakness or cramps
  • feelings of numbness, tingling, pricking, burning, or creeping on the skin
  • inability to move arms and legs
  • slow or irregular heartbeat
  • severe dry mouth
  • severe thirst
  • muscle pain or fatigue
  • decreased urination


Indication

Dyazide is intended to treat high blood pressure and edema in patients who have lower amounts of potassium in their bodies or for whom low potassium levels in the body could be dangerous. It causes the kidneys to get rid of unneeded water and sodium from the body into the urine, but reduces the loss of potassium.


Precautions

You should inform your doctor before taking Dyazide if you have:

  • Liver disease, including cirrhosis
  • Kidney disease or kidney failure
  • A history of kidney stones
  • Diabetes
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus or SLE)
  • Gout
  • Fluid or electrolyte problems
  • Any allergies, including allergies to sulfa drugs, foods, dyes or preservatives
  • Pregnant or trying to become pregnant
  • Breastfeeding
  • Taking any other medicines, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements


Dosage forms

Dyazide dose for all uses

The recommended Dyazide dose (no matter what the use) is 1 or 2 capsules a day (equivalent to 25-50 mg of hydrochlorothiazide and 37.5-75 mg of triamterene).
