What is Finasteride

Finasteride is a prescription medicine approved for male pattern baldness treatment and enlarged prostate treatment. Finasteride prevents the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone in the human body.


Side effects of Finasteride

The possible side effects of finasteride are:

  • Decreased libido (sex drive)
  • Erectile dysfunction (impotence or ED)
  • Decreased ejaculate amount
  • Breast enlargement


Indication

Finasteride is a prescription medicine that is used for treatment of:

  • male pattern baldness including hair loss at the very top of the head and hair loss near the front and center of the head
  • enlarged prostate known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, benign prostatic hypertrophy or BPH


Precautions

You should inform your doctor if you have:

  • Liver disease or liver failure including cirrhosis
  • Any allergies including allergies to foods, dyes or preservatives


Dosage forms

The usual adult dose for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia is 5 mg orally once a day.

The recommended adult dose for Male Pattern Hair Loss (androgenetic alopecia) is 1 mg once a day.
