What is Flonase

Flonase (fluticasone propionate nasal spray) is a prescription medication that related to a class of medications called corticosteroids. It is beneficial in the treatment of sneezing, runny or stuffy nose and nasal itching (known medically as rhinitis) caused by either allergies (known as allergic rhinitis) or other causes (known as non-allergic rhinitis). It works by preventing and decreasing inflammation (swelling that can cause other symptoms) in the nose.


Side effects of Flonase

Fluticasone common side effects include the followings:

  • headache
  • nosebleed
  • burning or irritation in the nose
  • runny nose
  • bloody mucus in nose
  • cough
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • stomach pain
  • diarrhea
  • dizziness


If you have noticed any of the following side effects, you should inform your doctor as soon as possible:

  • painful white patches in nose or throat
  • flu-like symptoms
  • sore throat
  • vision problems
  • injury to nose
  • new or increased acne (pimples)
  • easy bruising
  • enlarged face and neck
  • extreme tiredness
  • muscle weakness
  • irregular menstruation (periods)
  • hives
  • rash
  • itching
  • swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles or lower legs
  • hoarseness
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • wheezing


Indication

Flonase is used for the following purposes:

  • Treating seasonal or perennial (year-round) nasal allergy symptoms in adults and children as young as four years old
  • Treating non-allergic nasal symptoms in adults and children as young as four years old


Precautions

You should inform your doctor before taking Flonase if you have:

  • Recently had nasal surgery
  • Sores or injury to the inside of your nose
  • Not had chickenpox or the measles (or have not been vaccinated against them)
  • Tuberculosis, herpes or any other infections
  • Any allergies, including allergies to food, dyes or preservatives
  • Are breastfeeding, pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
  • Are taking any other medicines you are taking, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements


Dosage forms

Dose of Flonase for Nasal Symptoms

The recommended starting dose for treating allergic or non-allergic nasal symptoms in adults is 2 sprays of Flonase in each nostril once daily (4 sprays total) or one spray in each nostril twice daily (also 4 sprays total).

Your doctor may decrease your dose to 1 spray in each nostril once daily after a few days. Alternatively, your doctor may recommend 2 sprays of Flonase once daily (4 sprays total) only on the days you have symptoms.

For adolescents and children 4 years old and older, the recommended starting dosage of Flonase is 1 spray in each nostril once daily. If needed, your child's doctor may increase the dose up to two sprays in each nostril once daily.
