Guaifenesin is an expectorant that is approved to help loosen phlegm and reduce the mucus. Guaifenesin makes coughing easier and helps relieve chest congestion. It is used as an active ingredient in many different nonprescription and prescription medications.
Side effects of Guafenesin
Guaifenesin may cause some side effects such as:

Indication
Guaifenesin is an expectorant that is used in combination with other active ingredients in various medications. It is registered as a cough medication to help thin the mucus. Guaifenesin helps relieve chest congestion caused by the cold, infections or allergies.
Precautions
Be careful with Guaifenesin if you have:
- Asthma
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Chronic bronchitis
- Emphysema
- A cough that is accompanied by too much phlegm
- A fever, rash or persistent headache
- A cough that lasts more than seven days or goes away and comes back
- Any allergies, including to food, dyes or preservatives
You should inform your doctor if you are a smoker, pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant or breastfeeding and about any other medications you are taking.
Dosage forms
Most guaifenesin products can be prescribed for adults and children age 12 and older. Usual guaifenesin dose is 200 to 400 mg every 4 hours (not to exceed 2400 mg per day) for immediate-release products and 600 to 1200 mg every 12 hours (not to exceed 2400 ml in 24 hours) for extended-release products.
