Magnesium salicylate is an analgesic and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that helpful in the treatment of mild to moderate muscular pain. It can also be used to treat headaches, general back pain and certain joint pains like arthritis.
Side effects of Magnesium salicylate
Once you have noticed the following side effects, you should stop taking this medicine and inform your doctor as soon as possible:
- chest pain, severe dizziness, shortness of breath, slurred speech, problems with vision or balance
- sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body
- feeling like you might pass out
- black, bloody or tarry stools
- coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
- blood in your urine, urinating more or less than usual
- hearing problems, ringing in your ears
- swelling, rapid weight gain
- easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness, fever, chills, sore throat, flu symptoms
- fast or pounding heartbeats
- severe stomach pain, ongoing nausea or vomiting
- dark urine, jaundice
Other less serious side effects are:
- heartburn
- upset stomach
Indication
Magnesium salicylate is effective to reduce pain, swelling and joint stiffness caused by arthritis.
Precautions
It is not recommended to take Magnesium salicylate if you have:
- kidney disease
- asthma
- heart disease, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure
- a history of stroke or heart attack
- a stomach ulcer or intestinal bleeding
- a bleeding or blood clotting disorder
- diabetes
- swelling or fluid retention
- anemia (a lack of red blood cells)
- liver disease
- an enzyme deficiency called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD)
- nasal polyps
- if you are dehydrated
Dosage forms
The recommended dose of Magnesium salicylate is 1160 mg every 6 hours (580 mg magnesium salicylate tetrahydrate, equivalent to 467.2 mg anhydrous magnesium salicylate).
Your doctor may prescribe you a half dosage for effective pain relief. Doan's extra strength OTC dose is 2 x 580 mg magnesium salicylate tetrahydrate every 6 hours, equivalent to 934.4 mg of anhydrous magnesium salicylate .
