What is Propecia

Propecia (finasteride) is a prescription medication that effective in the treatment of male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia).


Side effects of Propecia

The most common side effects of Propecia are:

  • inability to have or maintain an erection
  • decreased sexual desire
  • decreased volume of ejaculate (amount of semen)
  • pain in the testicles

If you have noticed the following side effects, you should inform your doctor at once:

  • changes in the breasts such as increased size, lumps, pain, or nipple discharge
  • rash
  • itching
  • hives
  • swelling of the lips and face


Indication

Propecia is used as a hair loss treatment for certain types of male pattern baldness. It is not recommended for women or children.


Precautions

You should inform your doctor before taking Propecia if you have:

  • Liver disease or liver failure, including cirrhosis
  • Any allergies, including allergies to foods, dyes or preservatives
  • Are pregnant, want to bepregnant or breastfeeding
  • Are taking any other prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements


Dosage forms

There is only one dose of Propecia for male pattern baldness is 1 mg once daily. You should not adjust your dose unless your doctor specifically instructs you to do so.
