Protopic is a medicine that is applied to the skin and aimed for the treatment of atopic dermatitis. Protopic suppresses the immune system and the inflammation by inhibiting an enzyme,vital for the multiplication of T-cells, cells that are needed for activation of the immune system. Protopic was approved for atopic dermatitis treating in December 2000.
Side effects of Protopic
Protopic can cause the following side effects:
- severe stinging, burning, itching, or soreness where the medicine is applied
- swollen glands
- redness or crusting around your hair follicles
- signs of a skin infection (redness, swelling, itching, oozing)
The warning signals may also be:
- mild burning, stinging or itching
- skin redness
- acne
- cold or flu symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat
- headache
- feeling more sensitive to hot or cold temperatures
Indication
Protopic is a topical macrolide immunosuppressant, that acts by reducing cell activity in the body's immune system which helps to lessen the growth of atopic dermatitis on your skin. Protopic is effective in the treatment of atopic dermatitis (ezcema).
It is reserved for use in people who have failed other treatments or who cannot use other treatments. It is recommended to use this medicine only during a short time of time, but if you need, after some time you can use it again.
Precautions
You should not use this medication if you have the following conditions:
- skin cancer or a skin infection (including herpes or chickenpox)
- any genetic skin disorder (such as Netherton's syndrome)
- a weak immune system (caused by disease or by using certain medicines)
- kidney disease
- swelling, redness or irritation of large areas of your skin
Dosage forms
The treatment and dose should be determined by your doctor. Protopic is applied to the affected areas of skin 2 times a day.
