What is Sevoflurane

Sevoflurane is an anesthetic that works by depressing activity in the central nervous system, which causes loss of consciousness. This medication is effective for causing general anesthesia (loss of consciousness) before and during surgery. Side effects of Sevoflurane

Common side effects caused by this medication may include:

  • Agitation;
  • dizziness;
  • drowsiness;
  • increased cough;
  • increased saliva;
  • lightheadedness;
  • nausea;
  • shivering;
  • vomiting.

There is a list of more severe side effects:

  • allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue);
  • chills;
  • fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat;
  • fever;
  • seizures;
  • unusual change in amount or urine;
  • yellowing of the skin or eyes.


Indication

This medication is effective for causing general anesthesia (loss of consciousness) before and during surgery. It works by depressing activity in the central nervous system, which causes loss of consciousness.


Precautions

Do not use this medication if you:

  • are allergic to any ingredient in Sevoflurane
  • have or have a history of severely high body temperature (malignant hyperthermia)
  • are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding
  • are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • have liver or kidney problems or seizures
  • take Amiodarone, droxidopa, or labetalol because side effects can occur, such as increased risk for
  • low or high blood pressure and other heart complications


Dosage forms

The recommended dose of Sevoflurane for anesthesia is 1.4-2.6% OR 0.7-1.4% with nitrous oxide.
