What is Xanax

Xanax is a short-acting anxiolytic of the benzodiazepine class of psychoactive drugs.


Side effects of Xanax

There is a row of serious side effects after Xanax intake:

  • unusual risk-taking behavior, decreased inhibitions, no fear of danger
  • depressed mood, thoughts of suicide or hurting yourself
  • hyperactivity, agitation, hostility, hallucinations
  • feeling light-headed, fainting
  • seizure (convulsions)
  • urinating less than usual or not at all
  • muscle twitching, tremor
  • jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
  • drowsiness, dizziness, feeling irritable
  • sleep problems (insomnia)
  • muscle weakness, lack of balance or coordination, slurred speech
  • dry or watery mouth, increased sweating
  • loss of interest in sex


Indication

Xanax is used to cure anxiety or panic disorders and anxiety caused by depression.


Precautions

You should not take this medicine if you have:

  • narrow-angle glaucoma
  • if you are also taking itraconazole (Sporanox) or ketoconazole (Nizoral)
  • an allergic reaction to alprazolam or to other benzodiazepines such as chlordiazepoxide (Librium), clorazepate (Tranxene), diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan) or oxazepam (Serax)
  • asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD)
  • kidney or liver disease
  • a history of depression or suicidal thoughts or behavior
  • a history of drug or alcohol addiction


Dosage forms

Xanax Dosage for Anxiety is 0.25 mg to 0.5 mg three times daily ( for elderly people or those with liver disease is 0.25 mg two or three times daily).

Dose of Xanax for Panic Disorder is 0.5 mg three times daily.
