Food and Drug Administration warns about a new pill for Diabetics

07.12.11

American drug reviewers have announced that a new pill from Bristol-Myers Squibb Co and AstraZeneca Plc was effective in treating diabetes, but posed a huge number of safety risks.

The pill, with the chemical name dapagliflozin, could also be less effective if patients have other medical conditions such as kidney problems, reviewers from the Food and Drug Administration have reported in documents released Friday.

In clinical researches, this medication has been linked to a higher number of bladder and breast cancer.

The reviewers also focused on liver injury, bone safety, and urinary and genital infections.

However, the researchers need more time and study to determine the medicine completely until it will be approved and will be prescribed.

A panel of Food and Drug Administration advisers will review the data on dapagliflozin very soon.
