Less red meat and more fruit and grain may increase the chance of successful fertilization in men

Chances of successful fertilization increase, if men consume more fruit and grain products and less red meat, and also limit smoking and alcohol intake. To such conclusion have come experts from the Center on struggle against barrenness in San Paolo, Brasilia.
Earlier it has been established that reproductive function of women may be influenced by Body Mass Index (BMI) and by consumption of alcohol and smoking. However till now it was not clear, whether it concerns men. "Quality of sperm decreases because of negative influence of excess weight, alcohol and smoking. And the consumption of grain and fruit can improve its quality", said Edson Borges, the author of the study.
Study involved 250 couples who have undergone the procedure Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), allowing inject sperm into egg , thus making fertilization procedure that excludes any possible problems interfering to get pregnant. Borges asked men about their food and how often they consume fruit and vegetables, bean, grain, meat, fish, and also about predilection for smoking and alcohol. Experts also have analyzed samples of sperm from the male participants. Successful results of fertilization of egg was observed in 3/4 cases, thus 4 in 10 female participants have become pregnant during the research.
Scientists have found out that men with excess weight and a drinking habit had the worst concentration of sperm. Besides, their low-mobility sperm differ. The researchers have also noted that smoking influences only mobility of sperm. Chances of fertilization were much lower at the men often consuming red meat.
"Our research has confirmed the fact that certain vitamins, minerals and amino acids can improve quality of sperm while overconsumption of the red meat containing hormones; alcohol and smoking fatally affects the quality of sperm", Borges comments . As he added, couples who have passed treatment for barrenness should know that the diet and a lifestyle influence their chances of successful conception.
