Low calorie diet can beat Type 2 diabetes in four months

05.12.11

The latest study findings showed that a low-calorie diet could beat Type 2 diabetes in just four months.

According to a study a low-calorie diet removed insulin dependence and decreased amounts of dangerous fats around the heart in obese patients with Type 2 diabetes much better than any other prescribed medication.

To gain best results scientists analyzed cardiac function and pericardial fat in 15 patients with Type 2 diabetes including seven men and eight women. Patients consumed a diet consisting of just 500 calories a day for four months. Changes in body mass index (BMI) were also measured.

"Now we see that potential treatment of Type 2 Diabetes can be a relatively simple intervention of a very low-calorie diet," said lead researcher Sebastian Hammer in a statement. "Besides, these effects are long term, illustrating the potential of this therapy. Lifestyle interventions may also have more beneficial cardiac effects than prescribed medication in these patients."

Despite that the results look promising, this type of therapy is not approved completely to cure patients with diabetes, warned the researchers, and that patients should consult with their doctors before starting any type of reduced-calorie diet.

In the previous studies, researchers announced that people with Type 2 diabetes in an eight-week diet, cutting their daily calorie intake to just 600 calories a day. Just within a week, the patients’ blood sugar levels returned to normal. Within months after returning to a normal diet, seven of the 11 patients stayed free of the disease.
