Lung functions of babies born prematurely may improve with the years

08.12.11

According to a new research the negative effects that premature birth can affect the lungs of babies could be significantly improved in their teenage years.

The research was presented at the European Respiratory Society Annual Congress in Amsterdam. Normal pregnancy lasts 40 weeks. It is enough time for normal development of the infant. Babies born prematurely have immature lungs, it can lead to severe complications of breathing such as respiratory distress syndrome (RDS).

The scientists studied the lung functions of children at the age of 8-9 years and again at the age of 14-17 years with the help of a spirometry test. They compared children born at different stages of prematurity with those who born on time.

They found out that children born 33-34 weeks earlier had reduced lung functions at the age of 8-9 years in comparison with those who born in time. The lung functions of the children born prematurely improved at 14-17 years.

Mrs Sarah Kotecha from Cardiff University, the head of the study, concludes that children born prematurely have reduced lung functions at 8-9 years of age but their condition can improve with the years.
