Optimistic female students can achieve more on their grades

08.12.11

According to study findings optimism is associated with higher levels for female students, but lower marks for males.

Researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel have estimated relations and grades of 174 business students (the 28 percent man, the 72 percent woman) at the age of 20 - 28.

The researchers have found that female students who were more optimistic had higher grades than those who were less optimistic. However, high levels of optimism in male students tended to lead to self-confidence and less studying, resulting in lower grades, the results designated.

“Optimism in male students can lead to self-confidence or an attitude of ‘things will work out for the best,” Tamar Icekson, a doctoral student in the Faculty of Business and Management, said in a university news release. “So instead of studying enough for a test, they go out the night before.”

“For female students, optimism alone was beneficial because they are naturally more diligent than their colleagues-men,” Icekson said. “Women have lower self-respect and so if they are not assured that things will go right, they study for the test.”

While the research uncovered an association between attitude and grades, it did not prove a relationship of cause and effect.
