The pill from the coral will help to be protected from the sun

08.09.11

In the coming years the British scientists expect to introduce a pharmacological agent on the basis of the sea coral that protects the surface of the human body from the sun rays, writes Daily Mail.

The researchers from King's College in London say that in 5 years the “pills from the coral” may be tested on humans and in 10 years such pills may be available for sale and will be accessible to all.

By studying the properties of the corals obtained near the Australian coast, the researchers have examined their mechanisms of protection from the sun rays and found out that the corals surround themselves with microscopic marine algae forming the compound that acts as a natural “protective cream”. Moreover, this protection is used not only by the corals and algae, but also by the fish that feeds itself with the corals, because eating of the corals’ surface layer ensures protection of the surface of their bodies and eyes from the sun.

When speaking about ongoing studies, Daily Mail notes that the “pill from the coral” may replace sunblock creams and release people on the beach from the necessity of anointing their skin every few hours. At the same time, special creams will be required for a beautiful tan as before. Besides, it is still not clear, to which extent the “pills from the coral” will be effective, when protecting against skin cancer. Recent studies have shown that sunblock creams protect from solar burns, but are not a reliable prevention from skin oncological diseases.

British publication writes: the pill can also protect human eyes from the sun. But it's hard to imagine that this will lead to people refusing from their sunglasses with dark lenses.
