There is a close link between obesity and fibromyalgia

A new research shows that there is a close link between obesity and disability in patients with fibromyalgia. It was investigated by the University of Utah researchers.
The main aim of the research was to indicate the link between fibromyalgia and obesity. They suggested that obesity significantly connected with the disease and disability burden of the condition. 215 patients with fibromyalgia were examined in this research and given several physical tests to measure strength, flexibility and range of motion. The researchers also evaluated heart rates and sleep quality of the patients.
Obesity is prevalent among people suffering from fibromyalgia. Half of the researched patients were obese and 30% were overweight. Obese patients showed decreased strength, impaired flexibility and increased pain sensitivity which was more significant in lower part of the body.
The researchers concluded that obesity is a common complication of fibromyalgia that may worsen health condition. Obesity may cause hyperalgesia, disability, impaired quality of life and insomnia. The researchers also noted that weight loss improves the symptoms of fibromyalgia.
