Bald Barbie for young cancer survivors

12.01.12

Toy Company Mattel has created a bald Barbie for young cancer survivors. The campaign is gaining momentum and has support from Queensland's major cancer groups.

The idea is based on the suffering of 4-year-old Ruby Kidd, who is a cancer survivor and does not have lustrous, flowing locks like Barbie.

This bald Barbie wears a headscarf or headband for kids undergoing chemotherapy.

Tracey Kidd, Ruby's mother said that bald Barbie is a brilliant idea and it could help young girls who lose their hair.

Last year, Mattel had created a one-off Barbie without hair for 4-year-old Genesis Reyes who was US cancer patient. But it was made by a request from a friend of the Mattel chief executive's wife.

Today many people, even celebrities such as Charlie Sheen's ex-wife Denise Richards are called for the mass production of Barbie.

Supporters have also disagreed with the idea that girls could simply cut off Barbie's hair as it leaves her with unwanted tufts.

Cancer Council Queensland psychologist Samantha Clutton stated that children desired to fit in with peers. This doll could help them feel more beautiful.
