Vigorous physical exercises prevent Bowel Cancer

12.01.12

Scientists from the University of Western Australia (UWA) and the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research (WAIMR) stated that vigorous physical activity is beneficial in bowel cancer prevention.

They studied 870 patients suffering from bowel cancer and a control group of 996 people without this disease. All the participants had to answer the questions about their recreational physical activity, lifestyle, diet, medication and occupation.

The study showed that people who are physically active over their lifetime have a 40% decreased risk of cancer of the distal colon and rectum.

Such vigorous activity as jogging, cycling, swimming, tennis, hockey, netball and football are the most effective physical activities in bowel cancer prevention.

The scientists suggested that obesity and vitamin D may have a great effect on distal colon cancer than proximal colon cancer.

This study shows that lifestyle factors are more strongly tied to distal colon cancer than proximal colon cancer.

It really is never too late to start being physically active!
