Increased doses of Vitamin D may be beneficial in vision loss prevention

19.01.12

According to a new study made by researchers at the Institute of Ophthalmology at University College London, large doses of vitamin D help people to quit age related illnesses, especially the loss of vision.

The researchers studied a group of middle aged mice and found out that increasing the intake of vitamin D decreased the levels of toxic protein that has been associated with a number of age related illnesses including loss of vision, Alzheimer’s disease and heart diseases.

Professor Glen Jeffery, the leader of the study, stated that they need more study to check whether the same is beneficial in humans or not. The study can help to improve the overall health of the population. It can also decrease the cost linked to taking care of the elderly.

Vitamin D could be beneficial in prevention of a range of age-related health problems, from deteriorating vision to heart disease.
