Widowers should find a new partner to be healthy

22.12.11

According to a new study, men who have lost their partner due to cancer and who are still alone 4-5 years after their death are more likely to develop mental disorder than those who have found a new partner. Scientists at the Sahlgrenska Academy studied 691 Swedish widowers.

The scientists found out that more than 22 000 people die of cancer in Sweden each year. They proved that relatives of the deceased (especially wives) are more likely to die themselves or develop mental and physical disorder.

Researchers at the University of Gothenburg's Sahlgrenska Academy have studied 691 Swedish men who lost their wives to cancer. The results showed that widowers who had found a new partner 4-5 years after the death of their wife managed to deal with their death well. But those who remained alone had a high risk to become depressed, anxious. They also have sleep disorders and emotional blunting and were also more likely to use sleeping pills and antidepressants.

Professor Gunnar Steineck, the leader of the study, concluded that their study showed that the risk of poor mental health last for many years but, on the average, the risk is restricted to those who do not not find a new partner.
