Poor relationship between child and mother leads to obesity

11.01.12

Scientists from the Ohio State University got to know that if you are 15 and you have a poor relationship with your mother, you are more likely to be obese by more than 2 times.

The scientists examined more than 1000 toddlers and their relationship with their mothers. The researchers followed up on the participants when they were 15 years of age and found that those with the weakest bond with their mothers had doubled risk to develop obesity in comparison with those who had good relationship with their mothers.

Sarah Anderson, the leader of this study said that one of the reasons of the obesity is that children who have a poor relationship with their mothers tend to eat more comfort food throughout their childhood.

Sarah thinks that childhood obesity should be influenced by interventions that improve the emotional bonds between mothers and children rather than concentrating only on children’s food intake and activity.
