Daytime napping: is it good or not?

27.12.11

A new research identified that having some sleep, even a short afternoon nap are useful for people with sleep disorders. But for people with insomnia and an already decreased desire to sleep at night, midday shut-eye can actually be non-effective.

So before you nap on the couch this afternoon, you should think if it is disruptive for your nighttime sleep or not.

If you have no problem with your sleeping at night, a quick nap can work wonders to pull you through a tiresome or sleep-deprived day. Previous studies found out that a 45-minute daytime nap can improve memory function, but, unfortunately, it can lower blood pressure.

James Wyatt, director of the Sleep Disorders Service and Research Center at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, stated that daytime naps are very effective in people with narcolepsy or shift-work syndrome.

Daytime naps are not recommended for people suffering from insomnia, even if they feel tired during the day. Napping during the day can lead to bad sleep habits for people with temporary sleep issues caused by stress, illness or jet lag too.

Ralph Downey III, director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Loma Linda University Medical Center in California, said:

" Nap decreases your nighttime sleep. It becomes nothing more than another episode of fragmented sleep."
