Same-sex marriage legalization and its benefits among gay men

22.12.11

A new research showed that legalization of the same-sex marriage improves health and reduces stress among gay men. After that legalization in the state Massachusetts a number of visits by gay men to health clinics decreased significantly.

American researchers suppose that gays have a great risk of depression and suicidal thoughts than heterosexual men and that social exclusion may be partly responsible. Today same-sex marriages are legal in 6 states of the U.S.A- New York, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, Washington, D.C. and Massachusetts.

The researchers from Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health compared the registered demand for medical and mental health care from 1211 gay men before and after the change.

They found out that a number of visits to healthcare clinics reduced on 13% after the law was enacted. Doctors declared that there was a significant decrease in blood pressure problems and depression.

Dr Mark Hatzenbuehler, the leader of the research, concluded:

“Our research supposes that these changes improve the health of gay and bisexual men. Marriage equality may produce broad public health benefits by decreasing the occurrence of stress-related health conditions.”
