Hormone therapy is a new way to prevent a lot of premature births

23.12.11

A new research suggests that women with a history of premature birth should be given injections of a hormone derivative of progesterone every week.

It is obligatory that women should be less than 20 weeks pregnant and have only one fetus.

Researches showed that this hormone therapy can decrease the risk of premature birth up to 34% and thus could have prevented about 10000 preterm births in the U.S.A.

470000 American babies are born prematurely every year. The hormone helps to relax the uterine muscles and thus preventing early contractions.

Nobody knows if this hormone can be effective in other high-risk women such as those with multiple births or first time mothers with other risk factors. It is under the study.
